Program Benefits
- Work one-on-one with a faculty conducting health equity research
- Learn and apply introductory research skills that can be used in future classes, research opportunities, and/or careers
- Interact with community partners doing community-based work in Boston
- Become familiar with community-based participatory research (a type of research approach), both conceptually and in its application
- Network with college faculty, graduate students, and peers in the program
Application Details
Eligibility
- Attending Northeastern University, Roxbury Community College, or another two-year community college
- Rising Freshman or Sophomore in college
- Must be a student in one or more of the following NSF identified minority populations in the STEM workforce: identifying as a women, one of the three identified racial and ethnic groups (Black, Hispanic, American Indian or Alaska Native), or being a person with disabilities.
- Can commit to a 10-week in-person summer research experience on Northeastern’s Boston campus
Please note that no previous research experience is required!
Application Checklist
Please ensure you have the below materials for your application:
- Resume
- Applicants’ transcript
- List and description of applicants’ extracurricular activities
- Letter of recommendation from a teacher/professor from applicants’ senior year of high school, or their freshmen year of undergraduate study that can attest to their ability to be successful in an intensive research experience
- A brief essay that contains applicants’ reasons for wanting to take part in a research experience committed to community engaged and health equity research
- Two goals will be identified by applicants’ that they want to accomplish by being part of the SHINE Program
