A Northeastern University Research Experience for Undergraduates

SHINE
SHINE is a research training program that prepares undergraduate students from historically marginalized backgrounds to conduct community-based participatory research (CBPR) in health equity. This program is a collaboration between Northeastern University, Roxbury Community College, and other community partners located in the Greater Boston Area.
Our Vision
The Program
Foster the next generation of diverse health equity researchers, trained in ethical and sustainable CBPR practices, intentionally uplifting marginalized communities facing health inequities.
Year-long internship opportunity for freshmen and sophomore undergraduates to engage in health equity research, training courses, and mentorship from peers, alumni, research faculty, and community based organizations.

What is CBPR?
Community Based Participatory Research:
CBPR brings researchers and community organizations together to equitably collaborate on projects where community members can act as stakeholders, offer their expertise, and participate in decision making.
Principles of CBPR:
Aims to eliminate disparities, including in health equity.
Seeks to equitably involve community stakeholders in all stages of the research process through intentional partnerships.
Tool that bridges the gap between academic research and community health by tackling inequities marginalized populations face.
Prioritizes ethical engagement of multicultural and underrepresented populations in research
